Fall is a great time of year to sample soil from gardens, home lawns, and farms in preparation for next year’s growing season. The results from a properly collected, representative soil sample give critical insight into the pH and nutrient composition of the soil. This essential information is then used to make precise fertilizer and lime recommendations, ensuring optimal plant health and resource efficiency.
North Carolinians may have their soil tested throughout most of the year free of charge by the Agronomic Division of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS). However, the NCDA&CS implements a peak season fee of $4.00 per sample, which is in effect from November 25, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
To avoid this peak season fee, the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Camden County is urging local residents to submit their samples soon. Camden County residents must bring their soil samples to the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Camden County office by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 20th.
Individuals who would like to have their soil tested should contact their local North Carolina Cooperative Extension Center for the necessary forms and supplies. Camden County residents may contact Austin Brown, County Extension Director, directly at (252) 331-7630 for assistance.
