This is Brandi Silver, FCS agent with the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Burke Center. Our program today is about healthy cooking options.

Air frying is a fantastic way to enjoy your favorite fried foods without using unhealthy oils and unnecessarily heating up your kitchen this summer. If you have not jumped on the “air fryer” bandwagon yet, it is time to consider making this healthy change. Air fryers were introduced around 2010, and are readily available. They are designed to replace deep-fat fryers used to make “fried” foods such as french fries and chicken wings. The air fryer produces these family favorites that are lower in fat and calories. Foods prepared correctly in an air fryer come out with a crispy outside and juicy inside.

If you are in the market for a new air fryer there are a few things to consider when selecting your new appliance.

●      Cooking space and capacity– When you look for the capacity, be sure to check for usable cooking space, larger capacity does not necessarily mean more cooking space.

●      One layer of food produces the best product in an air fryer. The width of the air fryer cooking space is more important than the height.

●      Safety– You want to look for a well-insulated air fryer that has cool-touch hand grips to avoid burning your hands when removing. Also look for non-slip feet, just to avoid any unexpected slips that can also result in a burn.

Lastly, don’t forget the basics of food safety when using your new appliance and always use a thermometer to make sure food has reached a safe temperature.
